Goddess Mariamman is a popular deity of the southern parts of India, who is believed to be an avatar of goddess Parvati or Durga. Some people believe that the goddess is an incarnation of Renuka, the mother of Lord Parasurama, a Lord Vishnu avatar. People worship Goddess Mariamman with bizarre rituals like walking barefoot on burning embers, carrying kavadi or a hot pot (theechatti) which are some of the common methods of worship.
